Botox Cosmetic received FDA approval in 2002 for the temporary treatment of moderate to severe lines between the brows. Since that time, almost 12 million Botox Cosmetic procedures have been performed. Botox works by blocking neurotransmitters, which in turn stimulate muscle contraction. Since the muscle is weakened and movement is lessened, the skin surface becomes smoother and expression lines begin to fade. Some people note improvement just days after treatment, although maximum results are seen at around 2 weeks. The duration of the effect varies from patient to patient, with the average duration lasting around 3 months.
Dysport was approved by the FDA in 2009 for similar indications as Botox Cosmetic. It blocks the signal from nerve to muscle resulting in reduction of muscle activity and less evident frown lines. Dysport has been used for cosmetic purposes in other countries for many years. After its debut in the United States in 2009, Dysport has gained popularity in the United States cosmetic marketplace. The duration of the effect of Dysport is similar to Botox.
Restylane and Perlane are injectable gels used to restore fullness and volume to the areas of the face affected by fine lines and wrinkles. The results of these injections can be seen almost immediately. In addition, Restylane can be used to enhance the lips giving a more youthful appearance. Restylane and Perlane are both made of hyaluronic acid, which is a natural component of your skin. The injection of these products requires an in depth knowledge of facial anatomy, which is provided by our Board Certified Dermatologists. Results from these injections last several months.
Juvederm is an injectable gel composed of hyaluronic acid, a substance found in great abundance in our own skin. The combination of aging, sun exposure and genetics lead to a depletion of hyaluronic acid. Juvederm is used to correct moderate to severe facial folds and creases. It can also be injected into the lips for better definition and volume.
Laser and Light Based Treatments:
Photorejuvenation: Popularized in the media as the “Photo-Facial”, light based photorejuvenation is a non-surgical approach to skin renewal. Pulses of light are used to target undesirable blemishes and blood vessels on the face or other areas of your body such as the hands, arms, neck and chest. With little downtime, you can expect a more even and youthful appearing skin tone. These treatments are often performed as a series of up to 3 sessions, each spaced approximately 2-4 weeks apart. However, patients often see excellent results after only one or two sessions.
Facial Blood Vessels and Redness: Small blood vessels may appear in areas of the face such as the nose and cheeks due to a variety of factors, such as sun exposure and hormone changes. Fortunately with the newest laser technology we are able to specifically target and remove these unwanted vessels without damaging the surrounding skin. Often an inflammatory process such as rosacea may also give the facial skin a general flushed and red appearance. At Romagosa Dermatology Group we are able to treat this redness with specific lasers and light sources, in combination with an appropriate and individually tailored skin care regimen.
Laser Hair Removal: Unwanted hair may arise on the body and the face. Many treatments have been employed in the past to remove such hair, but unfortunately most of these treatments do not give a permanent solution and often create other problems such as inflamed and rough skin. With the latest laser technology, most types of unwanted hair may be safely and permanently removed after a series of in-office treatments. Romagosa Dermatology Group utilizes a state of the art laser specifically for hair removal. A consult with the doctors is necessary to ensure that the patient’s type of hair is appropriate for laser removal.
Sun Spot (Brown spot) Removal: With aging and increasing levels of sun damage, flat brown areas called ‘lentigos’ often arise on the neck, face, arms and hands. These areas can grow in size over time and will often darken with further sun exposure. For the treatment of these unwanted spots, Dr. Rosso and Dr. Barron utilize specific laser and light treatments that target the pigment responsible for darkening the skin. An optimal treatment regimen is the combination of an office based laser treatment and the application of topical antioxidants, fading creams and an appropriate daily sunblock. Any and all of these products can be recommended by one of our expert physicians.
Lines and Wrinkles: Utilizing state of the art fractional resurfacing technology, this laser treatment is ideally suited for patients with lines and creases around the eyes, mouth and elsewhere on the face. With just one treatment a patient can achieve long lasting results without lengthy downtime or surgery. Laser light energy is delivered deep into the skin generating new skin that is smooth and even.
Stretch Marks: Anytime the skin is stretched too far or too fast—such as during pregnancy, puberty, or with weight loss—a stretch mark can appear. These lines are normal and afflict almost all women at some point in life. Laser stretch mark treatment is a non-surgical laser light based treatment designed to decrease stretch mark redness and give the skin a smoother more natural appearance.
Scars:Fractional laser scar treatment is an alternative to surgery for acne scars and surgical scars. The laser light is able to break down scar tissue and triggers new, healthy tissue to form in its place. Generally a series of 3 to 5 treatments are needed for optimal results.
